Karnal baby reunited with parents
''We will go to Mumbai and live there. We will never come back to the village,'' said Pawan, father of the baby
 INDIA , 3-September-2007  1:26:8 AM
A ten-day-old baby, who snatched away from his parents following a village panchayat order, has been reunited with his parents.

''I have got my baby back, now I want my husband back too. I want to stay with him,'' said Kavita, mother of baby.

''We will go to Mumbai and live there. We will never come back to the village,'' said Pawan, father of the baby.

The hunt for the missing baby ended late on Sunday evening. A couple of hours after an FIR was registered naming six people, police traced the baby to the old city area in Karnal.

But they were unwilling to divulge much.

''We went slow because of the baby's safety, want to hand over the baby to its mother who's obviously the first claimant, both legally and morally,'' said A S Chawla, SSP, Karnal.

A community panchayat had separated the baby from its parents, Pawan and Kavita, as they belong to the same gotra or lineage.

One of the panchayat members had taken away the baby and given it to another couple.

The couple soon disappeared. Kavita too had gone missing.

But on Sunday, police had information that she was in Chandigarh.

Soon after the baby was recovered, it was taken for a quick medical check-up and then to Chandigarh where a desperate mother was waiting.

But surprisingly, Kavita's mother stands by the panchayat's decision.

And some of the panchayat members, who have been named in the FIR, are as adamant as ever.

''I want Pawan to go and live with his family and my daughter to live with us. The baby should be with her. The 'Gotra' is very important,'' said Kavita's mother.

Finally the baby is back in the loving care of its mother. The reunion has brought an end to the agony of Pawan and Kavita.
