| From Monday, women constables in Mumbai's railway stations will, for the very first time, be armed with rifles, patrolling the ladies compartment in the local trains.
The decision was taken by the RPF to tackle the growing incidents of crime in trains.
''Female passengers are more vulnerable. Then there is the added threat of terrorism and anti-social elements in the trains. To deal with these, we decided it would be better to deploy women constables for better security of female commuters,'' said Sonawane, Railway Police.
It's been almost 30 years since women were inducted into the RPF.
But ever since, the only weapon they were allowed to carry were these police batons. Now the guns have replaced the batons and with it comes the added responsibility of making female commuters feel safe.
''I am confident that our female constables will succeed in handling these weapons well. This will ensure better safety and also boost the confidence of these constables,'' said Chitralekha, Railway Police Constable.
It's clearly a decision that women passengers have welcomed.
