Uphaar fire case verdict postponed
Delhi court postponed the verdict in the Uphaar Cinema fire case and the date for judgement will be announced on October 22.
 INDIA , 5-September-2007  10:33:48 AM
A Delhi court postponed the verdict in the Uphaar Cinema fire case and the date for judgement will be announced on October 22.

Fifty-nine people had died in 1997 in a fire that broke out at the Uphaar Cinema because of faulty transformer as it screened the hit movie Border.

The association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy lodged an FIR against the owners of the film hall- Gopal and Sushil Ansal - and 14 others for criminal negligence.

While the Ansals have sought to deflect the blame in the terrifying tragedy for the families of the victims, today's verdict will be their only chance at closure.

Govind Kapoor arrived at court at 10 this morning. In 1997 he was nine-years-old and too young to watch Border.

His sister went to Uphaar cinema without him. It was the last time he ever saw her.

Others like Govind gathered either in court or at the Uphaar memorial, built on location at the cinema, but as soon as the hearing began the judge said the ten-year trial would last another six weeks causing Govind's heart to sink.

''I do not know how long I will have to wait before this gets over,'' said Govind.

The disbelief is understandable. After all, the case had been fast-tracked in May this year by the Delhi High Court, which ordered daily hearings and asked for the trial to be wrapped up by the end of August.

In November 1997 the CBI chargesheeted 16 people for the Uphaar tragedy including the cinema owners.

Since then there have been 500 hearings, 90 adjournments and two judges were dropped till Judge Mamta Sehgal took over in 2000.

Insult to the injury

Legal experts agree that judges in lower courts are given little assistance in sifting through the thousands of documents that accumulate in lengthy trial but point out that only adds insult to the injury of those waiting for justice.
