| Allister Pereira, who was convicted of running over seven people while he was drunk, has been taken into custody after court adjourned his bail plea hearing on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Bombay High Court pronounced a stricter sentence for Allister.
He has been sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs five lakh after the prosecution appealed against a milder sentence given by a lower court.
In April, Allister was sentenced to six months in prison and was fined Rs five lakh.
He was only found guilty of rash driving after his car mowed down pavement dwellers in Mumbai's Carter Road area on November 12, 2006.
But this time, the High Court has sentenced him for the more severe charge of culpable homicide.
While pronouncing its verdict, the two judge bench of the Bombay High Court made some strong observations.
The bench said the lower court had ignored material evidence in its judgement and had fallen in error of law.
It further said there is no cause for uncalled sympathy for Allister who showed a callous attitude and was most irresponsible.
Allister Pereira, said the judges, had breached the law and social obligation.
