Advocate Commissioners to monitor

 INDIA , 8-September-2007  3:31:55 AM
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) on Friday appointed two Advocate Commissioners who will visit the four Chennai Corporation zones and report on the actual state of affairs with regard to clearing of garbage in the areas.

While S. Natarajan would visit Kodambakkam and Pulianthope (zones 3 and 8), V. Suresh would visit Ice House and Adyar (zones 6 and 10).

A Bench of the Commission comprising Justice K. Sampath, president and Pon. Gunasekaran, member, passed the order on a miscellaneous petition filed by the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group, represented by its trustee N.L. Rajah seeking appointment of Advocate Commissioners. The consumer organisation had earlier filed a complaint before the Commission stating that Neel Metal Fanalca Environment Management Pvt.Ltd (second respondent), which entered into a contract with the Corporation (first respondent) failed to remove municipal waste in the four zones. The Corporation failed to ensure that the company performed the contractual obligations effectively.

G.A. Dominic Savio Joseph, counsel for the company, said that the backlog had already been cleared. That was disputed by the complainant. The Bench said the Advocate Commissioners should take the assistance of photographers.

They could collect affidavits from the residents. They could give their cell phone numbers (Mr. Natarajan – 94440 12258 and Dr.V. Suresh – 94442 31497) to the residents. They should visit their zones in the next seven days. The Advocate Commissioners should put the complainant and the opposite parties on notice before visiting the areas.

The matter has been posted for September 17.
