| The MP, N Janardhana Reddy, and his wife were travelling in a bullet-proof car to the temple town of Tirupati when they came under attack in Nellore.
They were unscathed, but three people in their convoy were killed.
Police have blamed the attack on Maoist rebels who have been fighting a 30-year insurgency which has killed thousands.
It was the first major attack in Andhra Pradesh in more than a year.
'Greatest threat'
Mr Reddy is a former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and currently a member of India's parliament. His wife, N Rajyalakshmi, is a state minister
N Janardhana Reddy and his wife are safe," a police official told Reuters news agency.
Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Jana Reddy said five others were wounded in the blast in the village of Vidyanagar, about 500km (310 miles) south of the state capital, Hyderabad.
The landmine missed Mr Reddy's car but hit one the others in his convoy, he said.
He told the BBC that he suspected "Maoist rebels were behind the attack".
The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the poor and landless in India. They are active across a number of states in central and southern India.
Last year India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the Maoists as the single greatest threat to the country's internal security.
