| The four-storeyed building complex coming up at Stanley Medical College to scale up facilities to the levels prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) is on schedule to be commissioned by December.
The Rs. 5-crore complex, superimposing the 70-year-old college building, will house non-clinical departments such as microbiology, biochemistry and pathology, an examination room and a lecture hall.
“Once the departments migrate to the new premises, the congestion at the hospital will ease considerably,” said A. Sundaram, college vice-principal and dean-in-charge.
In addition to the examination room and the lecture hall with a capacity of 375 seats each, the new complex will have a library.
The development of the facilities at the college, which started out with 72 students, has been out of step with the increase in student intake (150 new admissions annually and around 1,000 candidates at any point of time) and patient visits. So much so, the institution had fallen short of the MCI-stipulated requirements.
A Rs. 100-crore package announced recently by the Government marks a turnaround in the fortunes of this institution that caters to the low-income North Chennai population.
Rebuilding hostels for men and women and construction of twin-tower blocks on the lines of those at General Hospital are part of the upgradation plan.
