| Bangalore is infamous for its traffic jams and the frayed tempers and stress that it brings along. But the worst affected by these jams are critically ill patients for whom time could make the difference between life and death.
Help could now be at hand with the launch of air ambulance services in the city.
The helicopter division of Deccan aviation has tied up with Apollo hospitals to launch ambulance-on-demand services in Bangalore, which will take just 30 minutes to respond to an emergency situation.
''It is difficult to have a dedicated helicopter service. The minute our crew finds out about a medical emergency, they will be able to convert the chopper into an ambulance,'' said Capt G R Gopinath, MD, Air Deccan.
The service though does not come cheap. To transport a patient from rural Davangre to the hospital in Bangalore will cost approximately Rs 1.8 lakh.
To make this more affordable, Apollo hospitals is in talks with insurance companies to off set this cost.
''It will become more affordable with insurance,'' said Sangita Reddy, Executive Director, Apollo Hospitals.
The plan now is to connect tier two towns across the country starting with Visakapatnam.
