| The Orissa Air Squadron, the only Air NCC Wing in the state has achieved a major breakthrough by developing the first-ever Microlite Flight Simulator in the country to offer flight training to cadets in the safety of the classroom.
Designed at a cost of just Rs 2.5 lakh by Squadron Leader Rajkumar Satpathy and his team, the Simulator is likely to be a very useful tool for other flight training centres.
The flight simulator has come as a great boon to air cadets and aspiring commercial pilots in Bhubaneswar.
The simulator uses software, programmed to replicate the engine and controls of a microlite or a small aircraft, complete with a virtual image of the Bhubaneswar airport and its surroundings.
Thanks to financial constraints, the weather and the ever-growing air-traffic, real-time flying lessons have become a very difficult proposition.
But so far simulator training has been confined to elite defence forces and airlines.
With this microlite simulator however, trainees can learn flying through the ear in the safety of the classroom at just Rs 50 an hour instead of Rs 2000 for every sortie.
The simulator also has the facility of post flight analysis.
''It's easier now to get practical training inside the classroom and learn from mistakes,'' said NCC Cadet.
Precision flying at much less cost. For many aspiring pilots it's a dream that's taking flight.
