| The proposed amendments to anti-sati law, treating the woman as a victim and holding the entire community accountable for the incident, is expected to come up for discussion in a Union Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Among the amendments approved by the Group of Ministers or GoM is that the woman, who attempts to commit sati, should be treated as a victim rather than as an offender who has tried to commit suicide.
The amendments also prescribe more stringent punishment for even those who watch the act of sati.
Those found guilty could get the death penalty or life imprisonment.
The changes include making Panchayat functionaries responsible for implementing the Act.
The Cabinet is also likely to take up the amendments in the Immoral Trafficking Prevention (Amendment) Bill, providing stricter punishment for pimps, brothel owners and traffickers, enhancing the minimum punishment from five years to seven years and up to life term.
The amendments also provide for stricter punishment for the clients.
