Domestic helps play hard to get
The search for getting the right domestic help is turning into a major cause of concern for city dwellers
 INDIA , 14-September-2007  0:59:5 AM
The search for getting the right domestic help is turning into a major cause of concern for city dwellers.

''The first maid I got had two kids. In order to keep her happy with me, because her husband had run away, I had enrolled her kids in school. But after eight months she just left,'' said Rubina Jain, Businesswoman.

Rubina Jain's story is not uncommon. A working mother of two, she went through 13 maids in over two years.

Some left for personal reasons. Others, she dismissed because their work was unsatisfactory. Rubina was beginning to wonder, if she'd ever find someone reliable.

That's when Catherine came in. She has been with her for six years, now a part of her family.

Her desperation is something, Sonya Chowdhry, a mother of three can relate to.

''Sometimes it's just so hard that you compromise. You compromise to varying degrees and say alright doesn't matter that the TV is on all day, but at least this person is looking after my child in a safe way and they aren't doing anything bad.

''Or, okay they aren't intellectually stimulating the child, but I'll do that when I get home,'' said Sonya Dutta Chowdhry, Author.

Despite problems, demand for domestic help among working parents remain high in cities. But they don't want to go through domestic help agencies.

''Agencies are woefully inadequate. One agency had tribal maids. You can train them, but the language barrier is so much so even that agency closed down,'' said Rubina Jain.

Also, applicants at agencies are people who need the money but don't always have experience.

Manju Agarwal has been running an agency for 12 years. She says, it takes two to tango and that the maids have equally valid complaints.

''Very often we find clients are too choosy. If we send them someone for house work sometimes they will reject them because of a dark complexion, age or sometimes they don't think they are clean enough.
