| For the next ten days, cities across India will erupt in a spectacle of colour and celebration as Ganesh Chaturthi begins.
In cities like Mumbai, pandals with enormous Ganeshas will dominate the landscape- where the faithful will gather for daily prayers and prasad.
But for security forces, the festive season sees them tackle not just huge crowds but also maintain the highest vigil in the aftermath of the deadly Hyderabad blasts.
''There is no red alert but Mumbai is always red. The terrorist may attack Hyderabad, Bangalore but Mumbai for them is a big target as it is the commercial capital of India. So we have to be prepared. We are taking help from the home guards, CISF, SRPF to help in patrolling,'' said K L Prasad, Joint Commissioner of Police, Law & Order.
Around 4000 home guards, 1,500 private security guards will assist the 40,000 strong police force but even this number may not be enough, forcing the police to turn to the public for help.
''This year we asked almost all mandals to give us ten volunteers who we would train to be the eyes and ears of the police,'' said K L Prasad.
Even the mandals have welcomed the move and have put their own security systems in place.
''We have CCTV cameras installed everywhere, about 10-12 of them. There are monitors through, which we track people's movements. There is no room for error,'' said Satish Naik, Mandal Chairman, GSB.
