HC pulls up govt for Mumbai temple
But the government had to reverse that order and added even more detectors to check the coconuts that are carried in.
 INDIA , 20-September-2007  1:54:35 AM
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to explain why it thought an 8-foot wall was necessary to protect the Siddhivinayak temple.

The court's hearing a complaint by residents who live around the temple that the wall is obstructing the flow of traffic on one of Mumbai's major arterial roads.

Justice J N Patel pointedly asked the state government:

Is wall the only solution to the security threat perception?

If so, then relocate the temple

There are so many high-rises around the temple. One has to just sit with a rocket launcher on one of the buildings

God is supposed to protect us but today he needs our protection

The court's observations have come as a shot in the arm for local residents who've been campaigning against the wall ever since it was built two years ago.

''The wall is not the remedy or the only remedy. There are ways and methods of protecting the structures and they should have resorted to these remedies,'' said Sangharaj Rupavate, Advocate for Petitioners.

For the government the court's suggestion will further complicate matters.

The state government spent nearly Rs six crore to build and armed it further with CCTVS and metal detectors.

Recently citing a threat perception agencies responsible for the temple's security banned the entry of coconuts.

But the government had to reverse that order and added even more detectors to check the coconuts that are carried in.

''The wall was built because we were told to do so by senior police officials. God does not need the wall's protection. It is for the protection of the devotees,'' said Uday Pratap Singh, Trustee, Siddhivinayak Temple.

The only suggestion given by the court is to relocate the Siddhivinayak Temple.

Now within the next two weeks, officials of the home department will have to sit and decide - is the wall the best solution or are there better alternatives.
