The Delhi High Court has sentenced four journalists of the Mid-day newspaper for writing and publishing a series of articles against former Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal.
The articles accused Sabharwal of malpractices during sealing drive in the capital last year.
The court sentenced M K Tayal, the Editor, S K Akhtar, the then publisher, Vitusha Oberoi, Resident Editor and Irfan Khan, cartoonist to four months in jail for contempt of court.
The report published in Mid-day alleged that Sabharwal's sons had benefited from out of turn allotment of plots. The court said the four had tarnished the image of the highest court.
All four people have been released on a bond of Rupees 10,000.
Mid-day cartoonist Irfan, one of those sentenced claimed that the articles were in public interest.
''I have been making cartoons on corruption for the past 20 years and whenever I find that there is corruption somewhere, I make cartoons on people no matter what position they are on.
''I have been sentenced for four months, even if I was sentenced for 40 years I will continue to make cartoons,'' he said.
The convicted journalists have appealed against sentence in the Supreme Court, based on the premise that if truth is told, they can't be held for contempt of court.
