Parents rue child safety at schools
Two-year-old Ahana was pulled out of school six weeks ago after she almost lost one of her fingers in an accident.
 INDIA , 22-September-2007  3:40:30 AM
As more and more working Indians leave their kids at daycare centres, the question being asked is - who's responsible for the child's safety during those hours?

After a shocking incident during which a child badly hurt herself, parents say the school must be more careful while the daycare centre retorts- parents must be less paranoid.

Two-year-old Ahana was pulled out of school six weeks ago after she almost lost one of her fingers in an accident.

Ahana is now out of hospital but her parents are shocked at the callousness of the school and are even contemplating action.

''The school told me it was a minor injury. The doctor said we need to do a plastic surgery. Chopping off a finger is not simple, she is just 2.5 yrs old. I saw her holding a blood soaked chocolate. Today she doesn't want to go to school,'' said Rashmi Tiwari, parent.

Such incidents of negligence are on the rise. With most parents now working professionals, the demand for child daycare is more than ever before.

But often parents have regretted the decision.

''It is surprising that in the last one month, three such cases have come to light and they all required early intervention. They were operated under general anesthesia,'' said Dr Aditya Aggarwal, plastic surgeon, Gangaram Hospital.

Such cases often go unreported as parents are afraid of victimization, thus tying the hands of the child commission.

The commission is now keeping an eye on defaulting playschools and preparing to draw up guidelines, which were non-existent till now.

''There are no standards, each one is running their own shop. But not many have thought about what can happen to the children and how we must protect them. We want to regulate these pre schools and get them registered,'' said Shanta Sinha, Child Commission.

Those in the business agree that negligence needs to be looked into but argue that even parents need to be less paranoid.
