Heavy rain cripples Kolkata
Calcutta University has cancelled all exams scheduled for Tuesday and most schools and colleges will remain closed.
 INDIA , 25-September-2007  0:37:13 AM
Kolkata and its neighbouring districts are reeling under heavy rains that began on Saturday and in some places went on till early this morning.

Calcutta University has cancelled all exams scheduled for Tuesday and most schools and colleges will remain closed.

Rail services have also been hit. There was no power supply in most parts of the city through Monday night. In many houses, residents had to switch off water boxes as water entered the basement.

The worst affected areas are College street, Ahmerst Street, Behala, Bangur and a large part of the Salt Lake area.

On Monday, a fire brigade had to pump out water from the area of Palm Avenue where Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya stays.
