Despite the Left's warning to put the Indo-US nuclear deal on hold for six months, the government, it seems, is quietly determined to go ahead with its plans.
Government sources have told NDTV that it does not plan to delay the next steps, at least not yet.
The move means that India still plans to go ahead with talks with the IAEA around the middle of October.
Before that, the government still hopes to convince the Left, with watertight commitments, that even with the deal India will not get closer to the United States and guarantee to the Left that India will firmly keep a totally independent foreign policy.
If the Left is not convinced and the government carries on as planned then there is more likelihood of early elections.
Many think the deal has been overblown and it's not a big deal, but it is clearly important for the US Secretary of State, Condilezza Rice.
When asked by journalists at Reuters about whether she is worried about her legacy, Rice said, ''I am not worried about my legacy. With 14 months to go, I am worrying about what we have yet achieved on the Palestinian-Israeli track, on the North Korean nuclear issue, with the India civil nuclear deal, and trade agreements.''
