The nursery admissions muddle is likely to continue for some more time with the High Court asking schools to come up with their guidelines.
The court agreed with the Delhi government and said schools need not follow the 100 point system recommended by the Ashok Ganguly committee.
The committee gave points for proximity, educational qualification of parents and siblings.
Schools have been asked to come up with their own set of guidelines, which however cannot include interviews with the children or their parents.
''If it means any amount of autonomy coming back I am happy. It's too early to say what I would suggest to the government but I would probably stick to the neighbourhood,'' said Gowri Ishwaran, Principal, Sanskriti School.
The court has also asked the government to recommend a set of guidelines for schools to follow.
On the age of admission, the court said four years is the right age for Nursery and the child should be in class 1 at the age of 5. The case will be heard next on November 9.
