Whistleblowers victimised twice ove
In the last seven months Dandroo has had to relocate seven times which is too heavy a price for raising his voice against corruption
 INDIA , 27-September-2007  0:29:6 AM
It has been an endless walk for Ghulam Hassan Dandroo, who works as the supervisor in the flood control department.

He had complained against two clerks after they had asked for bribe to get the income tax rebate adjusted in his salary.

Earlier this year, Dandroo approached the Vigilance Department.

Ever since he has been made to pack his bags and move around the state many times.

''I gave a written complaint to the Vigilance Dpartment. They immediately swung into action and raided the flood control office at Barbarshah in Srinagar and caught two clerks red handed. It happened on March 4 or March 5 and I was transferred,'' said Dandroo.

In the last seven months Dandroo has had to relocate seven times which is too heavy a price for raising his voice against corruption.

Dandroo is now doing the rounds of the Vigilance office to save himself from this victimization.

''We ascertained their problems and on the basis of that we made an assessment and requested the government that a strong message should go to any middle or higher ranking departmental manager if he harasses a complainant or a whistle blower, serious action should be taken against him,'' said Ashok Bhan, Vigilance Commissioner.

That may not have given Dandroo any relief but he is still determined to fight corruption.

''Azad is against corruption and has declared a Jihad against it. On my own part I have also declared a Jihad against corruption,'' said Dandroo.

The chief minister has declared a war against corruption saying it's as evil as terrorism.

Medals have been announced for whistle-blowers. But if the medal has to come for the price Dandroo has paid, perhaps not many will be willing to pay it.

But despite official claims to weed out corruption it's the whistle blower who is at the receiving end.

Even after the recommendations by the vigilance no action has been taken against the officials victimizing whistle blowers in the state
