Rampant suicides haunt the valley
Experts blame it on the Valley's troubled past and a perceived uncertain future.
 INDIA , 5-October-2007  0:32:38 AM
Marred by militancy, the valley has a new cause to rue. With an alarming rise in the number of attempted suicides in the state, its a fresh worry for the local administration.

A scooter-borne man was caught on camera while he was on a suicide mission in Srinagar. After an early morning ride he parked the scooter on Amirakdal Bridge in the heart of the city, before jumping into the Jhelum.

Three days later the body of Anzar Rashid was found. His family though shattered, is unwilling to speak because of the social stigma attached to suicides in Kashmir.

This isn't a one-off case. Of late there has been an alarming increase in the number of suicides in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir. Suicide attempts are being reported almost on a daily basis.

Experts blame it on the Valley's troubled past and a perceived uncertain future.

''In a situation where everything becomes quite complex, everything becomes controversial. Proper person does not get proper response from the society. In this situation he feels the only way to escape from it is suicide,'' said Professor Bashir Ahmad Dabla, Department of Sociology, Kashmir University.

And to escape from life, the bridges over river Jhelum serve as a stage for death. The bridges that connect lives have become means to end lives in Kashmir.

Police say 300 people attempted suicide in the last six months, 65 of them died. But hospital records show a much higher number.

On an average 3-4 cases are registered daily with Kashmir's main healthcare centre, the SMHS hospital alone.

Experts say many other cases go unreported due to the stigma attached to suicides. Doctors blame the trend on troubled mental health and an unwillingness to seek medical attention.

''When we divide them into suicide, para-suicide and deliberate self harm, what we have found out is people who completed suicide.
