Chennai Metrowater on Friday made a strong case for the use of its secondary treated effluent by industrial units.
The secondary treated effluent available with Chennai Metrowater is 450 million litres a day (MLD), whereas the present offtake is 41 MLD.
Its managing director Shiv Das Meena told a conference on water and wastewater management, organised by the Tamil Nadu chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), that the effluent would be cheaper than desalinated water.
Of the present quantity sold to the industry, a private power utility was purchasing five MLD of raw sewage.
The remaining quantity was given to units such as Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited and Madras Fertilizers Limited.
While raw sewage is being sold at 10 paise a kilo litre (1,000 litres), the secondary treated sewage is supplied at Rs. 8.25 a KL.
The water agency would supply secondary treated sewage to industrial units in the Oragadam-Irungattukottai belt.
The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) would set up a facility to process the sewage for industrial use.
