Kerala schools making Maths easy
The state of Kerala is now trying to use innovative methods to make students not just fall in love with numbers, but excel in them as well.
 INDIA , 9-October-2007  0:41:58 AM
If a railway engine is travelling a distance of 75 km at 50 km an hour and another train on a parallel track is travelling at 25 km an hour, at what point will they cross?

Were you one of those who are completely baffled by such questions in school, struggling to imagine it all in abstract?

The state of Kerala is now trying to use innovative methods to make students not just fall in love with numbers, but excel in them as well.

For students, an exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram has been an eye-opener to the wonder of numbers.

''We are right now studying a chapter on congruent triangles. We have seen some models related to this and they have been very useful,'' said Naima Zakhir, Student.

''I feel that a student who is good in Mathematics will shine everywhere. Mathematics cannot be learnt by heart. It forces you to think when you attempt to solve a problem,'' added Mary Lal, Mathematics Teacher.

Kerala School of Mathematics

This exhibition is a result of a memorandum of understanding signed by the Kerala State Council for Science and Department of Atomic Energy to set up a 'Kerala School of Mathematics' in Kozhikode - a world-class mathematical studies centre.

The idea is to generate students' interest and help them overcome their fear of Maths, which has led to poor performance in the state board exams in the past two years.

The concept revolves around relating numbers and abstract equations to everyday life.

''A survey was conducted for the past two years focussing on subjects in which students fared badly. Five years back, it was English and now, it is Maths. We are promoting Maths and introducing innovative teaching concepts and models,'' said K Anil Kumar, Institute of Scientific Research & Training.

Mathematics has always been a subject that has evoked sharp reactions from students who either display an intense, lifelong dislike for the subject or an equally intense passion for numbers.
