The government and the Left seem to be heading towards breaking point even as the truce committee between the Left and the UPA on the contentious Indo-US nuclear deal meets on Tuesday.
The development follows a series of meetings last night between the Left leaders and the Congress leadership to work out some middle ground on the deal.
The government wants to start negotiations with the IAEA soon, possibly by this month, but the Left insists that going to the IAEA is the next step towards operationalising the deal. And if that happens it will be breaking point for the Left-UPA coalition.
And amongst those who believe elections could take place soon is apparently the Election Commission of India.
He has met the chief electoral officers of 14 states and asked all states to get their voters lists ready by mid-January 2008 and is to include names of new voters who turn 18 on New Year's Day 2008
