Former Gujarat CM decides ...
Barely a few metres away, top BJP leaders have gathered to hold the first meeting of the party's election management committee
 INDIA , 10-October-2007  1:11:31 AM
Former chief minister of Gujarat, Suresh Mehta, now wants to part ways after serving the party for 50 years.

He says any option is better than siding with Narendra Modi.

''I feel that Narendra Modi suffers from a fascist psychology, a disease I am sure that anti-Modi drive is a must and a pious duty for me,'' said Suresh Mehta, former Chief Minister, Gujarat.

Barely a few metres away, top BJP leaders have gathered to hold the first meeting of the party's election management committee.

Former state president Rajendrasinh Rana has been asked to head the election committee.

And Mehta has absolutely no role to play. He blames the high command for the sorry state of affairs in Gujarat.

Though elections are round the corner, the party is still struggling to deal with dissidence.

''People with vested interests even leaders are no more idealistic. Leaders like Advani, who used to be respected so much, have lost the dignity. Look at the way he acts and reacts these days. He's not even allowing the party to function democratically,'' said Suresh Mehta, former chief minister, Gujarat.

Dissidents have vowed to campaign against the BJP candidates this time. They are believed to have the patronage of Kesubhai Patel, a former chief minister and known Modi-baiter.

But the party in-charge for Gujarat believes the rebels Mehta included won't affect the BJP's poll fortunes.

''I don't care for the people who are leaving the party. I care for people who are joining us. The party has decided to contest this election under the leadership of Modi and that's final,'' said Om Mathur, BJP General Secretary.

Sources say Keshubhai Patel may prefer not to join the Congress this election but other heavyweight dissidents like Mehta are seriously considering the option, a fact top Congress leaders there also admit.

But a final political deal is yet to be sealed.
