A young couple has been banished from a village near Ambala in Haryana for marrying within the same gotra or clan.
Despite a court order, the couple is yet to be given police protection.
The family now lives at an undisclosed location. ''The court told us that we should be given protection but no protection has been given to us. Our lives are in danger,'' said Anita, wife.
Anita's husband is disturbed after his parents and brother were beaten up soon after his wedding.
''My parents have been beaten up many times, we complained to the police but they just note down the complaint and take no further action,'' said Tilak.
A case has been registered but the police are yet to provide any security to the family. ''We are investigating, and are speaking to the villagers also. We will try and see that they are safe,'' said Naresh Kumar, SHO, Mullana Police Station.
Village elders however do not regret their decision and say same-clan weddings cannot be tolerated.
''We will be at peace if they stay away from our village,'' said a native.
Last month a couple near Karnal from the same clan had a traumatic experience. The clan panchyat took away their week-old baby. The police later intervened to reunite the baby with his parents.
Perhaps voices against draconian Panchayat decisions are getting louder in Haryana.
