In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence by AIIMS, a man ended up losing his life after a screw was left in his chest cavity during a surgery and a second surgery had to be performed.
Gokul Prasad was discharged on September 8 after being operated upon. But he was re-admitted two days later for another surgery to remove the screw. Ten days later, he died.
''The screw was left in his chest but this is not a case of medical negligence,'' said Dr Shakti Gupta, spokesperson, AIIMS.
The Health Minister however does not buy that explanation and the surgeon Dr Bisoi has been suspended. ''This is a case of gross medical negligence. I have suspended the doctor,'' said Anbumani Ramadoss, Union Health Minister.
An inquiry has also been ordered though it means little for Prasad's family in Rajasthan.
This is not the first time that AIIMS has made news for the wrong reasons. In July this year, a towel was left in the stomach of a patient. The same month a consumer court slapped a fine of Rs five lakh on AIIMS for removing one of the breasts of woman... after she was misdiagnosed with cancer.
Last month a cataract surgery was performed on the wrong eye of a patient.
This aside, the power-tussle between the director and the health minister, the row over signing the degrees of students and reports of caste discrimination have all taken a toll on the hospital's prestige.
