Cops battle high stress levels
A study conducted by the police in Thiruvananthapuram, involving over a thousand police personnel, reveals some worrying patterns.
 INDIA , 12-October-2007  1:16:10 AM
Rising security concerns in different parts of the country have put police personnel under a lot of stress and tension with damaging consequences to their health - both mental and physical.

A study conducted by the police in Thiruvananthapuram, involving over a thousand police personnel, reveals some worrying patterns.

Over 58 per cent of policemen and 77 per cent of policewomen were overweight. Over 25 per cent of policemen suffered from diabetes and high BP. Signs of psychological disturbances were also observed in several personnel.

''Due to unscientific work patterns, stress and long working hours, many of them have developed alcoholic habits which adds to body fat,'' said Dr Sabeer A Rasheed, Consultant, Spandhanam project.

The trend is worrying senior police officials. ''We are already taking steps to introduce an eight hour system. But it can be done only in a phased manner. We are also introducing yoga to bring down stress levels and are encouraging them to participate in sports,'' said Arun Kumar Sinha, IG, Kerala Police.

The health problems of police in Thiruvananthapuram is reflective of the problems faced by policemen, elsewhere in the country.

As always, stress is the biggest villain and unless, immediate remedial measures are taken, the law enforcers might end up queuing up at hospitals.
