A spate of accidents might lead to the Blueline bus service in Delhi being phased out, but Mumbai has comparatively done much better.
The Brihanmumbai Electric and Transport Supply Company, which runs the old fashioned red buses on Mumbai's congested roads, has a better safety record.
Between April 2005 and March 2006, BEST registered 25 deaths compared to Blueline buses that killed 145 people in 2005.
Between April 2006 - March 2007, BEST figures rose to 53, which is still short of the Blueline figure.
From April 2007 onwards, BEST has caused 15 deaths while Blueline buses have caused much greater damage.
''We are the best in the country,'' said Uttam Khobragade, GM, BEST.
The BEST owes this arrogance of being the best to a comprehensive training programme, which includes Vipasana classes and meditation lessons from the Art of Living.
In fact, footage from accidents is shown to the drivers and analyzed.
''Most accidents happened because there are so many vehicles on the road and so much traffic. There is no road discipline. I am not justifying the accidents but the drivers are not always at fault,'' adds Khobragade.
BEST officials say that there is still a lot of scope for improvement and they want their drivers to be more responsible and punctual.
However, they insist the low numbers indicate they are simply the best bus transportation service in the country.
