Food aid causes stomach ache in J&K
Now, the problem is that they have not been able to finish the earlier supply, as parents have refused to send their children at these centres.
 INDIA , 16-October-2007  2:49:22 AM
Around 3.5 lakh children, under the age of six, are being fed with free daily meal at aanganwadi centres in Kashmir.

The free meal provided is prepared from substandard, rotten and expired material, often used without any prior checks. Most of the children throw away their daily meal as it gives them nothing but stomach ache.

Poor quality rice and spices way past their expiry date is what the children at aanganwadi centres get under the government's Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS).

Some like Gulshan, wife of a daily wage labour in Salamabad, and Abdullah Want depend on these centres to provide daily meals for their children. But the kids refuse to eat the food. ''They suffer from stomach pain. How can these children eat it? When they suffer once, they refuse to eat. They are kids, what can they eat,'' said Want.

Across the state, there are over 10,000 aanganwadi centres. Every year, the Centre spends over Rs 29 crore on this programme aimed at improving the health and nutrition of children in the state.

But nutrition seems to be the last concern for some officials. Rahila, a helper at ICDS, says they complained about the same but were asked to first finish the earlier stock.

Now, the problem is that they have not been able to finish the earlier supply, as parents have refused to send their children at these centres.

Cornered by the proof of negligence, the government has promised to take action soon. ''Our committee will go and see if there are expired items, they will be destroyed. Action would be taken against those who have received and done this. And new supplies will be sent to those centers,'' said Haji Nisar, Minister Social Welfare, J&K.

The kids at these centres don't know what they eat. Most of them come from weaker sections of the society and depend upon this food for daily meal.
