CP shootout: Victims' kin seek deat
The relatives of two businessmen killed in the sensational Connaught Place shootout case 10 years ago, sought death penalty for the policemen
 INDIA , 16-October-2007  10:7:36 AM
The relatives of two businessmen killed in the sensational Connaught Place shootout case 10 years ago, sought death penalty for the policemen who were held guilty by a court in New Delhi.

''I want death penalty for them. The punishment should be exemplary,'' Neema Goyal, wife of deceased businessman Pradeep Goyal said.

Minutes after the judgement, septuagenarian Singh, said, ''We will finally get peace now.

We demand strictest punishment for them. We have full faith in judiciary and hope that it will do the best.

The court would on October 24 pronounce the quantum of punishment against the 10 policemen, including suspended ACP S S Rathi, Inspector Anil Kumar, Sub Inspector Ashok Rana and seven others for the killing of the two businessmen on March 31, 1997 near the Statesman House building.

Police role

The case, which came to be known as the Connaught Place shootout, has exposed the darkest side of the Delhi police.

Its officers have been accused and now found guilty of murdering, lying and planting evidence.

For the families of the two men who died in the shootout, it is a hard-won victory.

It took barely five minutes for the CBI judge to announce his verdict. All 10 policemen are guilty of murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence, the most senior among them being Assistant Commissioner of Police SS Rathi.

The policemen who were all out on bail are now in custody and will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Rajindra Singh, whose son, Jagjit Singh was one of the two civilians who was killed by these policemen, spent 10 years waiting for justice.

''On a busy afternoon in 1997 Jagjit and his business partner Pradeep Goyal were driving from East Delhi to Connaught Place in a blue Esteem.

''With them was another friend. Suddenly the car was surrounded by 15 police men of the crime branch. And without warning the policemen opened fire.
