If you are a cricket fan, forced to be away from your television set on Wednesday when the Mumbai ODI is on, your mobile phone might bring you a small but significant compensation.
Cricinfo, Net-based service now owned by ESPN, has launched a ball-by-ball text commentary for mobiles in India. You need to have a handset that is Java or RIM-enabled to access the Internet. You can key in the Web address http://ci.plusmo.com to get Cricinfo’s ‘MobiCast.’ This does not require sending an SMS but gives you scrolling text messages for every ball as it is played.
The service is free, so there is nothing to pay — other than any data service plan you may be subscribing to with your Mobile provider.
The service will work with Net-enabled phones, Blackberry-type devices and Windows smart phones. Cricinfo’s Head, Wireless Media says over 500 phones models are supported — almost all popular ones in India.
New zippy servers
Meanwhile, the other Web resource for the cricket-crazy, Cricket Next (http://cricketnext.com) has revamped its portal and new zippy servers have made it palpably faster.
Last week the site also brought in coach Sandeep Patil and commentator Narottam Puri to join its roster of experts, which includes Trevor Chesterfield and V. Srivatsa. Many of its services are also available on mobile for GPRS handsets
