At least 300 people mostly children have died in Gorakhpur and neighbouring areas of eastern UP due to Encephalitis.
Last year the government had undertaken a vaccination programme covering 67 lakh children for Japanese Encephalitis after over a 1000 people died in 2005.
This programme proved inadequate and now a new virus strain has been found affecting people which is further complicating the problem.
According to doctors the new virus is water borne unlike the Japanese Encephalitisis that is caused by mosquitoes.
Dr Kushwaha professor in Pediatrics, Gorakhpur Medical College said, ''the symptoms of this new virus is more complex to handle and will pose more challenges to health personnel in the future.''
Bottlenecks
Lack of proper healthcare in remote villages only adds to the problems.
Six-year-old Anju from a village in neighbouring Bihar had her case complicated by a local doctor. Of the month in the hospital she spent 2 weeks at the ICU.
In another incident one and half year old Manish could not get help in time as the hospital is three hours away from his village.
When he was brought in at the medical college he was declared dead.
The family was told Manish suffered from brain fever or Encephalitis a disease that has already led to 290 deaths in this hospital alone.
But Manish's death would not add to this figure as he was not a registered patient.
This is also indicative of the number of deaths that must have occurred before reaching hospitals and are unregistered.
Also the disease is more prevalent among children due to malnutrition.
Of the 1600 patients admitted this season, majority were children and of them 222 have died.
