Diamonds valued at 21,700 carats and worth Rs 5 to 10 crore or more were stolen on Tuesday night in Mumbai.
They were stolen from a polishing unit in Panchratna Building.
Police estimates that the theft could be Rs 5 to 10 crore, making it the most expensive theft of Mumbai.
This has caused anxiety within the diamond industry since Panchratna to them is mecca of diamond trade.
Police suspect it to be an inside job and lay blame on security lapse since there was no guard at the trade office.
The diamonds had been kept in an open drawer in a wooden cupboard on the fifth floor.
R D Pawar zone DCP said, ''The diamonds were not stored in a safe but in a wooden cupboard. And if they were worth Rs 10 crore, they should have been kept in a safe.''
It is the second instance of a diamond theft this month in Mumbai.
A week ago at the Mumbai international airport diamonds worth Rs 4.5 crores were stolen from a sealed container after being offloaded.
Also in November last year a carpenter stole diamonds worth Rs 4.5 crore from the residence of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri family.
The Police have formed special teams to track the Panchratna thief but security concerns at Mumbai's diamond trading hub still remains.
