Taxis carrying BPO employees are under the scanner of the traffic police.
Leading Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) companies situated along the IT corridor and other parts of the city function round the clock. Hundreds of employees return home at different times, depending on their shift. Many of them are picked up or dropped late in the night or early morning in taxis hired by the firms. With more and more commuters complaining about rash driving, the traffic police have deemed it necessary to watch them closely.
Managers of IT companies said whenever there were complaints from employees or the public about rash driving or misbehaviour, immediate action was taken against the drivers. As for over-speeding, they said it was impossible, considering the heavy traffic in the city.
A senior executive working for a major taxi operator said: “Our drivers are given counselling at regular intervals. We also provide periodical free medical check-up. We have internal checks on our drivers.”
Another taxi operator in Egmore said some commuters, who made a note of the phone numbers on the how-am-I-driving stickers on the rear of these vehicles, registered complaints. But, they failed to mention the registration number, making it difficult to identify the erring driver. A traffic police officer in the suburban area said taxi drivers were fined for rash driving, no-parking violations and over-speeding on several stretches, including the IT corridor, Mount-Poonamallee and Guindy.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said: “Whenever we receive complaints from the public or when our officers conduct surprise checks, erring drivers are fined for dangerous driving.”
There have been a few fatal accidents during odd hours in the recent past. Investigations suggest that in many cases, the accidents occurred as the drivers hit the dividers, causing the vehicles to overturn.
