Mining threatens Morena monuments
The ASI has written letters to the Minister and officials concerned for help but to no avail.
 INDIA , 19-October-2007  2:38:13 AM
The ancient monuments in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh have got threatened due to illegal mining in the region.

The monuments are showing signs of cracks or are crumbling due to the blasts being carried out for mining activities near the monuments protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The ASI has written letters to the Minister and officials concerned for help but to no avail.

Built by the Pratihara kings, some of these monuments are over a thousand years old. Conservation work began two years ago after the site was ravaged by an earlier earthquake.

Worried that the menace was undoing all their efforts, the ASI wrote several letters to officials in the BJP government, but nothing happened.

The agency now plans to write to RSS chief KS Sudarshan.

''More harm is being done to temples now as compared to the temples broken by Mohammed Ghazni and Mohammed Ghori in the medieval times. It is happening at a time when the BJP, which is in power, talks of conserving culture,'' said Muhammed KK, Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Bhopal Circle.

Mine owners have threatened the ASI staff and even manhandled them. The police have been informed but the blasts continue.

The Mining minister, who also holds the Culture portfolio, has a ready explanation but no solution.

''Armed gangs indulge in illegal mining during the nights. We have sat a couple of times to discuss the ways and means to check it. We will implement the suggestions if any from the people,'' said Laxmikant Sharma, Mining and Culture Minister, Madhya Pradesh.

For the BJP leaders, Ram and temple are important only for votes
