Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday responded to the BJP's comments on the government's nuclear deal compulsions.
As reports of Singh having felt let down by his allies on the issue of the Indo-US nuclear deal gather momentum, the BJP had attacked the prime minister terming him weak.
The saffron party on Tuesday said that the reality of a ''sad and helpless'' leader is a cause for national worry and that the nation needs an ''enthusiastic leader'' who is decisive and not ''helpless.''
However, the prime minister has responded to that charge by highlighting that a fractured mandate has made it very difficult for his government to function.
''Given the nature of competitive politics and the very fractured mandate given to governments, it has become difficult sometimes for us to do what is manifestly obvious,'' Manmohan Singh said while speaking at a function on Tuesday.
Earlier, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley led the charge against the prime minister.
''The nation needs to reflect on a question 'can a sad man lead a resurgent nation'? Neither the prime minister nor his office is doing the nation a favour by projecting him as a helpless leader.''
''India is a growing, youthful and resurgent nation. It needs an enthusiastic leader who can take decisions and implement them,'' said Jaitley. (With PTI Inputs)
