Airport mishap sparks security ...
The accident on the tarmac has also jolted the Civil Aviation Ministry into action as officials talk about a spate of accidents at theairport thisyear
 INDIA , 27-October-2007  2:49:49 AM
Less than a week after 28-year-old Sanskriti from Deccan Air was killed after a vehicle ran over her at the Delhi airport, there is finally some progress in the investigation.

NDTV has exclusive information that the police have narrowed the search down to eight vehicles whose tyre marks match those at the accident site.

The accident on the tarmac has also jolted the Civil Aviation Ministry into action as officials talk about a spate of accidents at the airport this year.

These include four instances of aircraft colliding with equipment, 12 instances of equipment colliding with planes and nearly 33 instances of equipment collisions.

''All these incidents have given us a lot of anxiety and the government is very concerned about the safety aspect on the air site,'' said K N Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation.

To begin with cars in the apron area of the airport can only now drive at 15km/hr. The number of cars ferrying staff and people, now at 800, will be reduced to 500.

All cars will have speed governors by November 10 and all airport and airline staff will get fluorescent jackets.

Airports in a hyper-sensitive security category like Delhi will get a radio frequency tower or radar system to monitor all movements. This will be installed at the Delhi airport by February 2008 and will cost between Rs 10-15 crore.

In addition, no drivers will be allowed in the airport without driving permits, a rule that airport authorities admit was being violated.

All staff will also be frisked to prevent thefts at cargo counters and staff will not be allowed to bring children into the apron area.

Lastly, more web cams and close circuit TVs will be used to visually map out as much of the airport as possible.

Behind closed doors lies a resolve to change things after the death of Sanskriti. But what will really help her family get a sense of closure is when the vehicle that ran over her is caught.
