Heavy rain lashes Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Government, not wanting to take any chances, has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges across the state.
 INDIA , 29-October-2007  2:22:6 AM
The Northeast monsoon has just set in and is getting active causing heavy rains in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

Met Department has confirmed that the low pressure over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify in another 24 hours.

There has been 6.6 cm of rainfall in just 12 hours in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Government, not wanting to take any chances, has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges across the state.

''Following official orders from our Minister of school education we have declared a holiday for all schools across Tamil Nadu as a precautionary measure,'' said G Arivoli, Joint Director, School Education Department.

The Met Department has given a heavy rainfall warning over north coastal Tamil Nadu and South coastal Andha Pradesh in the strong winds in the order of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour in next 48 hours.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

The heavy downpour has not only paralysed normal life but has already claimed its victims.

Meanwhile, Fifteen people including four children have died in rain related incidents in Tamil Nadu after heavy downpour triggered by the Northeast monsoon.

Four people were killed in trichy while seven including four were killed in Kumbakonam when a row of houses collapsed due to the heavy downpour.

Most parts of Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall since Saturday with several low loying areas inundated and crops destroyed.

This tragedy has once again raised questions on the periodic maintenance and repairs of old buildings by authorities.
