In a new twist to the Karnataka political drama, Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said that he will get back to MLAs in two days after consulting the Centre.
The JD(S) had offered to parade its MLAs before the Governor.
Earlier on Monday, 129 MLAs submitted letters of support for BJP-JD(S) coalition to the Governor, 16 more than the half way mark in the Karnataka assembly.
A rebellion threatened by senior JD(S) leader M P Prakash fizzled out with six of his supporters deserting but the former Home Minister stood his ground and met the Governor pleading with him not to allow this combine to form the government because it is ''illegal and unethical''.
''A total of 126 MLAs - 80 from BJP and 46 from JD(S) attended the joint legislature party meeting and unanimously elected Yeddyurappa (of BJP) as its leader,'' State unit BJP president D V Sadananda Gowda told reporters, urging Thakur to facilitate government formation.
On a day of swift developments, the BJP and JD(S) furnished sworn affidavits from MLAs pledging support to government formation to strengthen the coalition's claim.
Prakash, a respected leader of JD(S), told Thakur that ''the new alliance of BJP-JD(S) is illegal, unethical and not in accordance with law and public interest''.
The JD(S) managed to rope in three MLAs from JD(U) - Nagamani, H Anjaneya, Bhimappa Sarikar and three independents - Balaraj, Narasimha Naik and Srinivas - to end up with a tally of 46.
Gowda warns BJP
Just as Karnataka appears to be close to getting a BJP government, Deve Gowda has made it clear that he's still wary of the right-wing party.
He says his party will ensure minorities are protected. Interestingly, the JD(S) chief claims he was forced into supporting the BJP because S M Krishna a former Congress chief minister was trying to split the JD(S).
Meanwhile, not leaving anything to chance the BJP's chief minister-in-waiting B S Yeddyurappa seems to have resorted to numerology.
