Normal life was affected across West Bengal due to a 12-hour bandh called by the main opposition Trinamool Congress in protest against ''state sponsored terrorism in Nandigram'' and on several other issues.
City roads wore a deserted look with privates buses, taxis, autorickshaws and other modes of transport mostly off, while governments buses and trams were plying with very few passengers.
Shops and commercial establishements and educational institutions were mostly closed.
There was reports of obstruction to train movement at various places of Sealdah and Howrah division. Rail blockades were also reported from Hooghly and South 24 Parganas district in particular.
The bandh sponsors have exempted the Information Technology (IT) sector from the shutdown.
Tight security arrangements was in place across the state with police patrolling in vulnerable areas. Armed police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in strength at the Hazra crossing area in the city, considered the main stronghold of Trinamool Congress.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said the protestors obstructed road and rail traffic at different places but there was no report of any untoward incident till 9 am.
