BJP's hartal disrupts Kerala
Early reports said the hartal seriously affected normal life in urban areas but evoked partial response in small towns and villages
 INDIA , 1-November-2007  3:4:26 AM
The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the BJP in Kerala against the formation of Salem Railway Division by bifurcating Palakkad Division hit normal life in the state on Thursday.

The hartal did not spare the state capital where security had been tightened in view of President Pratibha Patil's engagements.

Early reports said the hartal seriously affected normal life in urban areas but evoked partial response in small towns and villages.

The party state unit had rejected the plea from different quarters to call off the hartal as it coincided with the state-formation day and the visit of the President.

Hartal evoked near total response in Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. However the situation remained by and large peaceful.

In Kozhikode, state-owned and private buses kept off the roads, while two-wheelers, cars and some private vehicles were seen plying.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and attendance in government offices was reported to be thin.

While the shutdown was almost complete in the coastal areas of Tirur and Tanur in Malappuram, a few shops remained open in some parts of the district.

In Kannur, the hartal assumed proportions of a bandh as BJP workers forced closure of some shops in interior areas. Patrolling has been intensified in the politically sensitive localities, police said.

In central Kerala also, life was affected. In Kochi, the hartal hit normal life as vehicles including buses, taxis and trucks kept off the roads.

Most of the schools and colleges have declared holiday in the city. Shops remained closed.

The public sector Cochin Shipyard Limited has reported 74 per cent attendance, sources said.
