Rizwanur case: The missing bond
There is more trouble for the Kolkata police in the Rizwanur Rehman case.
 INDIA , 2-November-2007  10:15:14 AM
There is more trouble for the Kolkata police in the Rizwanur Rehman case.

On September 8, Priyanka Todi had agreed to return to her father's house only if the police signed a bond promising that Rizwanur would be given protection until she returned to him.

A police officer signed such a bond but refused to give Priyanka and Rizwanur a copy of it.

None of the police officers questioned in the case mentioned this bond during their interrogation by the CBI. But one of Rizwanur's friends did and now the CBI is on the trail of the missing bond.

Priyanka's uncle Anil Saraogi wrote on September 8: ''I, Anil Saraogi, do hereby take charge of my niece Priyanka Todi since her father has been admitted to Apollo Hospital and his condition is precarious. I shall again produce her within 7 days at 7/B Tiljala Lane.''

The statement was written on a plain sheet of paper and submitted at the headquarters of the Kolkata police before Saraogi took Priyanka home.

The plain-paper promise was counter signed by Priyanka and Rizwanur. The original of this bond is now with the CBI.

But what the CBI has not got is a second bond that the couple insisted the police sign promising security for Rizwanur.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Sukanti Chakraborty signed this bond, countersigned by Priyanka and Rizwanur. But the police did not give the couple a copy of it. The CBI is now questioning the police about this second bond.

''Rizwanur wanted the bond to say that his life will be safe and nothing untoward will happen to him in the 7-10 days that Priyanka will be away. The bond was signed but unfortunately the copy was not given to Rizwanur,'' said Rehan Waris, Rizwanur's friend.

The missing bond is vital as Rizwanur and Priyanka feared foul play by Priyanka's industrialist father Ashok Todi.

Priyanka agreed to her seven-day stay at her parents' place only on the condition that the police give an undertaking that no harm would come to Rizwanur.
