The Food and Drug Administration of Maharashtra raided five places in Andheri West, Mumbai and seized 1,000 litres of adulterated milk on Friday morning.
Three people have been arrested, who are migrants from Andhra Pradesh. The culprits bought milk, poured out half the milk by punching a hole in the bag and filled it with water before resealing it.
Earlier this year, the FDA had revealed that nearly 25 per cent of the milk produced in the state was adulterated.
Milk bags from reputed milk companies like Amul, Gokul and Mahanand were found to be tampered with.
But despite regular raids by the FDA, it seems, this illegal trade is a thriving industry in Mumbais' dingy slums.
Though the adulteration takes place in the supply chain, consumption figures explain just why this illegal activity is so widespread.
Mumbai requires a whopping 40 lakh litres of milk in a day. Of this, 30 lakh litres is supplied by government and private dairies outside the city.
The remaining 10 lakh litres is sourced from tabelas - cow sheds located in the city.
