The country's business capital Mumbai, gripped with problems of population, pollution and a struggling infrastructure, has continuously looked for solutions.
Help has now come from unexpected quarters as young business school students come up with suggestions to transform Mumbai into a world-class city.
Their ideas might be the work of amateurs but experts feel it is definitely worth considering.
''The problem with Mumbai is that there are too many organisations working and creating chaos,'' said Viral Parikh, Student, Narsee Monjee Institute.
Some of the innovative suggestions include a ring sky rail to connect important business districts, installing anti-collision devices in trains to reduce accidents, staggered holidays to people to reduce transport burden and developing east-west corridors to ease the north-south corridor.
While some suggestions would seem ambitious, the judges would only like them to be taken forward.
''These ideas need to be taken forward. The students must do more detailing and put it forward to the authorities,'' said Bina Balakrishnan, Transport Planning Consultant, Mumbai Environmental Social Network (MESN).
While the grand plans of transforming Mumbai into Shanghai are proving difficult, the authorities in Mumbai could well take a cue from these suggestions.
