Bush urges Musharraf to hold elections
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 6-November-2007  9:8:24 AM
Striking a fine balance after a meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister, US President George W Bush told Pakistani President General Musharraf to shed his uniform and hold elections.

''We expect there to be elections as soon as possible and that the President should remove his military uniform. Previous to his decision, we made it clear that these emergency measures would undermine democracy. Having said that, I did remind the Prime Minister that President Musharraf has been a strong fighter against extremists and radicals,'' said George W Bush, President, USA.

With the international pressure mounting, General Musharraf told diplomats in Islamabad that he has a plan.

''I am determined to remove my uniform once we correct these pillars - the judiciary, and the executive and the Parliament legislative. I can assure you there will be harmony, confidence will come back into government in the law-enforcement agencies and Pakistan will start moving again on the same track as we were moving,'' he said.

On the ground though, as the crackdown continues, the situation in Pakistan is clearly causing much embarrassment in Washington.

''He is calculating that the US will have no choice but to support him because the alternative - trying to under cut his position - could lead to chaos and instability. So far, it looks like President Musharraf's calculations have worked,'' said Gary Samore, Vice President, Council on Foreign Relations.

The grouse among many Pakistani expats protesting on the streets of America, is that Washington is still not doing enough like scaling back the more than $10 billion in aid.

''The idea is to show solidarity with our professors, human rights activists, members of the opposition who stood up to the emergency martial law in Pakistan. The idea is that since they are arrested and are unable to get their words out we are here to do it for them,'' said an expat.
