Against the backdrop of expensive crackers and other ostentation surrounding Diwali, three coastal districs in Andhra Pradesh still practice age-old tradition of making fire crackers at home.
These are not only very easy to make, but the price difference is also huge.
The chemical salts and other materials that are required to make crackers are: KNo3 1kg, sulphur 250g, tin flakes 500g, carbon and CaCo3 125g each, castor oil 60 ml and crushed lime.
Also small earthenware for the flowerpots. For the pencils, one can handroll paper and fill in the mixture one side and sand the other side. The cost is Rs 200 for a dozen flower pots and 50 pencils. A flowerpot in the market costs Rs 15 a piece.
``Our elders have been making firecrackers at home for ages in Guntur, Vijayawada, Godavari districts, this has been a tradition. It has to dry well, then it will light up nicely,'' said Revathy, a housewife.
Sriramachandra Murthy, who makes crackers at home said, ''Of course there is science but no expertise needed, I learnt from my father and brother.''
Now, not only sweets but even fire crackers can be made at home for an extra special Diwali.
