Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi usually draws extreme reactions and they have become even sharper after the recent expose on his alleged role in the Godhra riots.
Seeking a third term, Modi has the Gujarati community in Mumbai split down the middle.
On one side are staunch Modi supporters, who will unleash a blitzkrieg in the run-up to the polls with letters of support, an SMS campaign and door to door visits in Gujarat's villages.
''It's like a battle. You don't invite people to fight a battle, you simply jump into the fray,'' said Yogesh Sagar, Corporator, BJP.
But Mumbai's 40 lakh Gujaratis, which are a divided community, are witnessing an anti-Modi propaganda.
A letter that has the support of 133 Mumbai-based Gujarati social organisaitons, explained how Modi has tarnished the image of their home state.
''Everyone's talking about development. What development? Gujarat is facing a crisis, there are 12 suicides a day on average and 80,000 small-scale industries have shut down,'' said Hemraj Shah, NCP leader and President, Mumbai Gujarat Samaj.
As the election battle is heating up in Gujarat, tremors are already being felt in Mumbai. And this time, the vast Gujarati population in the country's financial capital is daggers drawn.
On his part, Modi is no stranger to turf wars. But it remains to seen whether the polarisation of the community in Mumbai will dent Modi's share of the eleciton pie or not.
