Celebrating Diwali at work
''I am looking forward to celebrate Diwali in office. But of course I will miss my family,'' said Arun, an Executive at Convergys.
 INDIA , 9-November-2007  0:52:3 AM
Today, on the occasion of Diwali, as we wait for the moonless night to light up our crackers and candles, many will head out to work.

It is just another day in the life of the BPO worker, with holidays marked out on their calendar other than Diwali and Holi. But they have surely found a way to celebrate at work.

''I am looking forward to celebrate Diwali in office. But of course I will miss my family,'' said Arun, an Executive at Convergys.

The call centres will bring Diwali into the office to ensure that thousands of employees who will spend Diwali at work don't feel completely cut off from the festival.

Mandeep Kaur, Director, HR, Convergys said, ''We are blending traditional with the modern because of the young employees we have. So we are doing a traditional puja and after that a DJ party. So it is two days of lots of fun for everybody who is at work with us. All those who are working on Diwali will get double pay.''

There is no question of taking the day off, as clients in America and Europe want business as usual. But rosters have been re-organised to ensure that everyone gets to spend at least a part of the day with their family.

''Most of our people would be working this Diwali. People prefer spending time from 7 pm to midnight for Diwali puja at home. So if we have a shift starting at 8 pm, we have moved it down to 9 pm. This way they can spend some time at home and similarly people who have been at work will leave early to be at home by 10 - 10.30pm,' said Gaurav Chawla, Associate VP, Infovision.

And those who will spend Diwali working, certainly aren't holding back.

''Early in the morning, I woke up at 6 am and made Rangoli at home. When I came to office, I thought of doing the same with my colleagues. I don't think I would be missing home, even though I would be working on Diwali day,'' said Swati, an employee of Infovision.
