After keeping the BJP-JD(S) combine in suspense for a month, the Centre today decided to revoke President's rule in Karnataka paving the way for the formation of the first BJP-led government in south India.
The decision was taken by the Union Cabinet two days after the Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur submitted his ''final'' report on the BJP-JD(S) demand for invitation to form the government.
The proposal of the Home Ministry on the Karnataka Governor's recommendations on the revocation of President's rule in the state was discussed at the meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
''After considering the report and after taking into account all facts and circumstances, the Cabinet has decided to recommend to the President that the President's rule may be revoked,'' Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.
Chidambaram said that the Governor may be advised to invite BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa to form the government.
The BJP would be sharing power with the H D Devegowda-led JD(S), whose coalition had collapsed last month on the issue of transfer of power which led to imposition of President's Rule in the state on October 9.
The BJP and JD(S) had paraded their MLAs before President Pratibha Patil a couple of days back to press their demand.
The move came after the two parties came together to share power having earlier parted ways and hurled charges and counter-charges at each other.
JD(S) welcomed the Centre's decision to revoke President's rule and said the BJP-JD(S) combine should be immediately invited to form government in the state.
''It is a victory for democracy,'' JD(S) Karnataka unit president Merajuddin Patel said.
Former chief minister Kumaraswamy also welcomed the Union cabinet's recommendation. But he made it clear that HD Deve Gowda would be very much a part of running the government.
