Abdul Karim Telgi, currently lodged in Pune's Yerwada Jail, is standing trial for the murder of his driver who attempted to swindle Telgi of some of his ill-gotten gains.
On the night of August 27, 2001, the gruesome events unfolded at Telgi's Cuffe Parade flat- the scene of crime now sealed by the CBI.
A month before the murder, Telgi's cronies Christopher Bhatti and Suraj Butki staged a roadside hold-up near Goa and decamped with Rs 1,80,000.
When Telgi learnt of the plot, he brought Bhatti to his Mumbai flat. Alongwith with five of his associates, he allegedly tortured and killed Bhatti.
Bhatti's body was then bundled into the boot of a car, which was driven to the Mahim creek and dumped into the swirling water.
Questioned after yet another bundle of fake stamp papers was seized, Telgi inadvertently confessed to Bhatti's murder.
''The judgement is being dictated. Since video-conferencing has not been happening, it will take a few days to finish,'' said Pradeep Gharat, Lawyer, CBI.
Telgi has been convicted and sentenced in three cases so far and is still facing trial in 45.
But in a couple of days, the murder of a friend-turned-foe will catch up with one of the biggest scamsters in the annals of the country's criminal history.
